NARRAGANSETT, RI (October 3) – The University of Connecticut men’s golf team
finished tied for 10th with Brigham Young and Mississippi at the 2001 Adams Cup
of Newport Intercollegiate Golf Tournament on Wednesday at the Point Judith
Country Club. The University of New Mexico, which led the 17-team field
yesterday after two rounds, won the tournament with a combined score of 854
(+10). Vanderbilt’s Mark Donnell and New Mexico’s Wil Collins shared the
individual championship, each carding a final round 70 to finish at 207 (-4) for
the tournament.
The Huskies combined to shoot 884 for the two-day tournament, led by freshman
Mike Murphy (Woburn, MA) and senior Sean Vigue (Lebanon, CT), who both finished
with 216 (+6) for the tournament. Vigue fired the best UConn round of the day
with a 69 (-1) while Murphy finished the final round with a 72 (+2). Senior
Kevin O’Connor (East Lyme, CT) carded a final round 82 (+12) to finish tied for
64th for the tournament with a 230 (+20). Senior Kevin Coghlan’s (North Ridge,
CA) 80 (+10) and freshman Daniel Keefe’s (Cumberland, RI) 77 (+7) rounded out
UConn’s scoring. Coghlan finished the tournament tied for 69th with a 231 while
Keefe finished tied for 76th with a 234.
The Huskies will next take to the links in New Haven, CT for the Yale
Invitational which was rescheduled for October 13-14. A season ago at this
tournament, UConn finished fifth in a 21-team field with a three-round total of
912.
