WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (April 3, 2007) — Two University of Connecticut baseball team pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter as the Huskies defeated in-state foe Hartford, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon from Campus Field.

UConn starting pitcher Robert Van Woert (Johnson City, N.Y.) earned his fourth win of the season after allowing no runs on just one hit while striking out four in seven innings on the hill.  Van Woert failed to give up a Hartford hit until the sixth inning, and allowed just two runners to reach second base.

Freshman Will Musson (Wethersfield, Conn.) pitched the final two frames and allowed one run on one hit to record his first collegiate save.

Hartford (3-16) reliever Zach Stefka (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing one run on one hit in one inning of mound duty.  Hawk starting pitcher Ben Sobocinski pitched three perfect innings to start the game before giving way to the Hartford bullpen.

After four straight scoreless innings, UConn scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth as the Huskies capitalized on a Hartford error.  Senior shortstop Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single through the left side and took second on a wild pitch.  After junior Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) drew a walk, senior Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.  The following play, Donovan gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead as he scored when Erik Turgeon's (Palm Harbor, Fla.) grounder was booted by Hawk shortstop Brady Stouffer.

UConn (13-12) added a second run in the top of the seventh inning to up its lead to 2-0.  Karl opened the inning with a double into right-center to extend his hitting streak to six games.  After taking third on a fly out to the outfield, Karl came home when freshman Harold Brantley Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.) singled into right field.

The Huskies tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning as junior left fielder Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) hit his first home run of the season.

Hartford scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth as second baseman Adam Bowser delivered an RBI single.

UConn returns to action Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when the Huskies travel to Rutgers to begin a three-game BIG EAST series.
