Baseball Drops 4-2 Decision to Stetson

Connecticut vs Stetson University (Feb 23, 2008)

DeLAND, Fla. (February 23, 2008) — The University of Connecticut baseball team  fell to Stetson 4-2 on Saturday night at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.

UConn scored first in the top of the second inning, when senior Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) reached base and advanced to second on a throwing error by Stetson shortstop Robert Crews. Karl then moved over to third on a single by freshman Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) and scored the unearned run on a wild pitch.

Stetson picked up all its runs in the fourth inning, capped by a two-RBI single by Aaron Crittenden. The big inning for Stetson was sparked by a strikeout by Jacob deGrom but was able to reach base on a wild pitch. A single to left followed by a wild pitch put two men in scoring position, before two walks scored Stetson's first run of the game. A single brought home two for the host team, before they added another run before the end of the inning.

UConn was also to add their second run in the fifth inning as a single by Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) started the inning. Freshman Mike Nemeth (Washington, N.J.) followed with a single to left to move Fatse to third to set up a sacrifice fly by Dale Brannon (St. Petersburg, Fla.).

UConn's Dusty Odenbach (Rochester, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Huskies and pitched 2.1 innings before being relieved by sophomore Trent DeLazzer (Cypress, Cali.). Odenbach recorded three hits, four runs and four strikeouts on the night, while DeLazzer came in out of the bullpen to pitch 4.1 innings. DeLazzer picked up three strikeouts and gave up three hits on the night.

Stetson was led on the mound by Nick Pugliese, who pitched six innings while striking out six. Stetson's preseason All-American Robbie Elsemiller closed the game with his first save of the year.

The Huskies, now 0-2, will return to action on Sunday, February 24, as they face Michigan State in their last game in DeLand, Fla. Game time is set for noon.
