Baseball Posts 14-5 Win Over Fairfield

— Mike Olt's grand slam capped an eight-run eighth inning and
helped the University of Connecticut baseball team to a 14-5 win
over Fairfield on Thursday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field in
Storrs.
The Huskies improve to 15-12 on
the year with the win while the Stags fall to 5-18.
UConn took a quick 2-0 lead after
two batters had come to bat when Elliot Glynn delivered a two run
home run to right field. UConn's cushion grew by a run in the bottom
of the fifth when Gordon Stevens led off with a double and scored on
an RBI groundout to second by Glynn for his third RBI of the game.
The Stags plated two runs in the
top of the sixth on a trio of two-out singles to make it a one-run
game at 3-2. The Huskies responded with three runs in the bottom of
a busy sixth inning. Doug Elliot drove in Mike Nemeth with an RBI
single and later scored on the overthrow of a sacrifice bunt by
Stevens. A sacrifice fly by Pierre LePage capped the rally. The
Stags scored twice in the top of the seventh to make it a 6-4 game.
The bottom of the seventh saw
UConn break the contest wide open with eight runs to make it a 14-4
contest. A two-RBI single by Elliot, sacrifice fly by Stevens and
RBI single by LePage accounted for the first four runs of the rally.
The Huskies went on to load the bases with two outs and then cap the
frame's scoring in style when Olt lofted a home run to left field.
Fairfield would get a single run in the eighth to account for the
14-5 final.
Trent DeLazzer earned the win on
the mound for UConn, allowing four runs over 6.2 innings which
striking out six Stags. Kevin Fico picked up the loss for Fairfield,
yielding a respectable three runs over five innings. The Stag
bullpen however combined to allow 11 runs in four innings of work.
The Huskies, weather permitting,
return to action on Friday when they play host to Cincinnati in BIG
EAST action at 3:00 p.m.
