BOX SCORE (.HTML)

STORRS, Conn. (April 3, 2008) — Mike Olt's grand slam capped an eight-run eighth inning and helped the University of Connecticut baseball team to a 14-5 win over Fairfield on Thursday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs.

The Huskies improve to 15-12 on the year with the win while the Stags fall to 5-18.

UConn took a quick 2-0 lead after two batters had come to bat when Elliot Glynn delivered a two run home run to right field. UConn's cushion grew by a run in the bottom of the fifth when Gordon Stevens led off with a double and scored on an RBI groundout to second by Glynn for his third RBI of the game.

The Stags plated two runs in the top of the sixth on a trio of two-out singles to make it a one-run game at 3-2. The Huskies responded with three runs in the bottom of a busy sixth inning. Doug Elliot drove in Mike Nemeth with an RBI single and later scored on the overthrow of a sacrifice bunt by Stevens. A sacrifice fly by Pierre LePage capped the rally. The Stags scored twice in the top of the seventh to make it a 6-4 game.

The bottom of the seventh saw UConn break the contest wide open with eight runs to make it a 14-4 contest. A two-RBI single by Elliot, sacrifice fly by Stevens and RBI single by LePage accounted for the first four runs of the rally. The Huskies went on to load the bases with two outs and then cap the frame's scoring in style when Olt lofted a home run to left field. Fairfield would get a single run in the eighth to account for the 14-5 final.

Trent DeLazzer earned the win on the mound for UConn, allowing four runs over 6.2 innings which striking out six Stags. Kevin Fico picked up the loss for Fairfield, yielding a respectable three runs over five innings. The Stag bullpen however combined to allow 11 runs in four innings of work.
