Playing a doubleheader of the first time this season, the University
of Connecticut baseball team dropped both games to Cincinnati,
losing game one 5-3 and game two 4-3. The Huskies are now 15-14 on
the season and 5-6 in the BIG EAST. The Bearcats are 14-11 and 6-2.
The Huskies scored in the bottom of the first inning when Pierre
LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) led off with a double and the next
batter Elliot Glynn (Los Alamitos, Calif.) singled him home.
UConn increased their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when
Glynn singled home Gordon Stevens (Vista, Calif.).
Cincinnati tied the score in the top of the fifth, then took a 5-2
lead in the top of the sixth. Ryan Baker had the big hit, a two run
double that closed out the Bearcats scoring. In
the bottom of the sixth with two outs, LePage singled then advanced
to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Glynn then singled him home
for his third RBI of the game. Connecticut only managed one more hit
and the Bearcats won game one 5-3. In addition
to his three RBI, Glynn batted 4-for-5 on the day. LePage was
3-for-5 with two runs scored and Stevens was 2-for-4 with one run
scored. John Folino (Quincy, Mass.) took the loss, going
seven innings and giving up five runs. The first
four innings of the second game moved along very quickly as they
were scoreless and took only 45 minutes to play. Cincinnati scored
all four of their runs in the top of the fifth. With two men on,
shortstop Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) misplayed a ground ball
which allowed a run to score. The ball bounced into centerfield,
where Glynn overthrew the third baseman, allowing another run to
score. The Bearcats added two more runs later in the inning on a
groundout and a double. Cincinnati pitcher Mike
Hill kept UConn of the board until the bottom of the eighth. LePage
and Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) each singled off him to
chase him out of the game. With two outs facing pitcher Jake Geglein,
Olt doubled to right center scoring both LePage and Mahoney.
Harold Brantley Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.) singled through the
right side to score Olt and make it 4-3. The Bearcats recovered from
there and retired the next four batters to hold on for the win.
Mahoney was 2-for-4 with one run scored in the game. Olt was 2-for-4
with two RBI and one run scored. Dan Mahoney (Boston, Mass.)
took the tough luck loss, pitching seven innings, giving up four
runs and four hits while striking out four.
UConn concludes their weekend set with Cincinnati with a single game
