Huskies Fall to St. John's 10-5 in BIG EAST Action

QUEENS, N.Y. (April 12, 2008) — A five-run eighth inning rally was not enough as the University of Connecticut baseball team fell to BIG EAST opponent St. John's 10-5 on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y.

With the loss, UConn drops to 18-16 overall and 6-8 in BIG EAST play. St. John's improves to an overall record of 24-8 on the year.

Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for St. John's Carlos Del Rosario in the first inning as he was able to connect for the Red Storm's first hit of the day as he scored two to give the host team an early 2-0 lead.

The Red Storm picked up two doubles and a triple in the third inning to go ahead 4-0. Two more runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth gave the Red Storm an opportunity to pull away with the game at 9-0 as Del Rosario added two more RBIs to his game's tally of five.

The Huskies were held scoreless until the eighth inning as sophomore Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) recorded his sixth homerun of the season to add two runs to the Huskies' score, pulling to within four at 9-5. The Huskies recorded five runs off five hits in the inning, including four straight hits, led by singles from Harold Brantley, Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.), Pierre LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) and Elliot Glynn (Los Alamitos, Calif.). Senior co-captain Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) followed in the UConn rally with a double to pick up his 19th RBI of the season.

St. John's added another run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 10-5 lead late in the game.

Freshman Dan Mahoney (Boston, Mass.) took the mound for the Huskies for his sixth start of the year. He took the loss for the Huskies, dropping his mark on the year to 0-4 as he gave up eight hits and six runs in 4.1 innings, while Dusty Odenbach came in out of the bullpen and allowed four hits and three runs in 1.2 innings. Doug Jennings and Stephen Blumetti also saw time on the mound for the Huskies late in the game, combining for two innings pitched, one run and three hits.

The Huskies were shutout in the top of the ninth inning as St. John's took the second game of the series 10-5. Red Storm's Del Rosario finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with five RBIs while Paul Karmas recorded a 3-for-4 performance with three runs scored. St. John's starting pitcher, George Brown, allowed eight hits in his shutout performance, earning his seventh win of the season.

UConn's Pat Mahoney went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored as teammates Brantley, Elliot and Fatse each chipped in with two hits a piece.

UConn will face St. John's in the last game of the three-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
