Huskies Fall to Brown 14-10

Connecticut vs Brown (Apr 16, 2008)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 16, 2008) —  A nine run sixth inning led Brown University over the University of Connecticut baseball team 14-10 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Murray Stadium.

UConn evens out at 19-19 overall this season with the loss.

Brown started off the bottom of the first with two runs to take an early lead on sophomore starting pitcher Trent DeLazzer (Cypress, Calif.). Brown's Brian Kelaher scored the first run of the game as he was knocked in off a two-run homerun by Conor Reardon.

The Huskies came back in the top of the third inning as senior Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) forced a lead-off walk and later scored on an infield throwing error on a Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) sacrifice bunt. UConn's second run of that inning was freshman Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.), who scored on a Mike Nemeth (Washington, N.J.) groundout to first base.

Brown answered back in the bottom of the inning with one more run. Steve Daniels started the inning with a triple to centerfield and was able to score on a JJ Eno groundout to second base to put the Bears up 3-2.

But UConn tied the game at three in the fifth and took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Mahoney scored his second run of the game as he once again led off the inning by reaching base, this time on a single to centerfield. He later scored on a Nemeth single to center, to give Nemeth his second RBI of the game. The Huskies added the go-ahead run in the sixth when sophomore Harold Brantley, Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.) scored from second on a double by freshman Elliot Glynn (Los Alamitos, Calif.). Brantley got on base to start off the inning with a single to right field off a pitch from Brown relief pitcher Conor Burke. Brantley then moved to second on a called balk and later scored on Glynn's fifth double of the season.

Brown gave the Huskies trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Bears scored nine runs off seven hits and one error as the Brown ball club batted through two different UConn pitchers. DeLazzer came out before the sixth after he went five innings, allowing four hits and three runs, while striking out five. Dennis Accomando (Monroe, Conn.) was able to strike out two straight batters to end the inning but the damage was done as Dusty Odenbach (Rochester, N.Y.) struggled on the mound, allowing five hits and five runs in the inning.

But the Huskies were able to score three runs in the seventh to make the score 12-7. Both Gordon Stevens (Vista, Calif.) and Glynn picked up doubles in the inning as Pierre LePage scored his team leading 41st run scored.

UConn added one run in the eighth and two in the ninth to pull closer to the Bears but Brown tallied two more in the eighth inning to clinch the 14-10 victory.

Mike Olt led the way for the Huskies with a 3-for-4 performance with two runs, two RBIs and two walks. Stevens added two hits.

Brown was led by Matt Colantonio and Kelaher, both with three hits. Matt Kimball earned the win for Brown, improving his record to 2-1 on the year as Odenbach got the loss for the Huskies, dropping to 2-3 overall.

UConn will host BIG EAST opponent Seton Hall this weekend, starting on Friday with a 3:00 p.m. start time. Saturday and Sunday's battles will begin at noon at J.O. Christian Field.
