Huskies Suffer Season-Ending 1-0 Loss at BC

NEWTON, Mass. (Nov. 23) – The University of Connecticut men’s soccer team fell to Boston College, 1-0, in NCAA Second Round action on Tuesday afternoon at the Newton Campus Soccer Field in Newton, Mass. UConn ends the season with a record of 12-8-3, while the Eagles improve to 13-4-2 on the year.

The teams battled in the first half but opportunities did not yield any results. In the 23rd minute, senior Stephen Arias (Bakersfield, Calif.) managed to carry the ball past several B.C. players to get open in the middle of the box, but sent the shot wide of the right goal post. The Eagles threatened with three shots on goal in the first half but junior goalkeeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, Wis.) turned all three aside to hold the match in a scoreless deadlock.

At the 60-minute mark, the ball came to Johann Helgason off a corner kick and he fed the ball to Sam Brill for the eventual game-winner.

UConn made several attempts to rally as sophomore Steve Sealy (St. James, Trinidad) had a header that glanced high right, freshman Karl Schilling (Canton, Conn.) lofted a free kick dangerously close to the goal mouth and classmate Chukwudi Chijindu (Fontana, Calif.) narrowly missed getting a foot on a feed from junior Drew Brown (Middletown, Conn.), but the Huskies could not climb back from the one-goal deficit.

Overall for the game, UConn held a 13-11 advantage in shots but did not register a shot on goal. Schuerman made four saves while facing five shots to finish the season with a 10-5-3 record. BC had seven corner kicks to UConn's three, and both teams registered eight fouls apiece.
