Huskies Earn Win Over Boston University in Exhibition Play

STORRS, Conn. (August 19, 2007) - O'Brian White (Scarborough, Ontario) scored the lone goal of the game as the University of Connecticut men's soccer team defeated Boston University, 1-0, in exhibition play Sunday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The Huskies are now 1-0 in the preseason, while the Terriers are off to a 0-1 start.

Everything clicked for the Huskies midway through the first half when White spurred a flurry of offensive activity in the 26th minute with a header off Akeem Priestley's (Kingston, Jamaica) corner kick. From then on, UConn's well-balanced attack fired on all cylinders with three more shots following in the ensuing minutes.

The onslaught of shots continued until late in the seventh minute when White beat his BU defender on the left side of the penalty area and sent a hard shot across the goal mouth into the lower right corner of the net to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage.

UConn's defense, bolstered by senior All-American Julius James (Maloney Gardens, Trinidad), acted as a well-oiled machine to keep the Terriers from evening up the score throughout the rest of the match. James illustrated on several occasions why he is once again a Hermann Trophy candidate, most notably at the 1:28 mark in the first period when he earned a team save off a rocket from BU's Jin Oh.

Oh drew goalkeeper Josh Ford (Liverpool, N.Y.) off the line and sent a hard shot toward the right side of the goal, but James made a charge and blocked the ball with his chest to keep the Terriers scoreless. Ford finished the day with one save through 45 minutes of play, while junior transfer Martin Nieuwoudt (Pretoria, South Africa) played the second half without being forced to make a stop.

The Huskies out-shot BU by a 11-7 margin, including a 7-4 advantage in the first period. They also held the upper-hand in corner kicks, besting the Terriers, 4-2.

UConn wraps up the exhibition portion of the season with its annual match against Duke Saturday, Aug. 25 at 7:00 p.m. in Morrone Stadium. Admission is free for all fans.
