Off the Pitch with Coach Ray Reid: Sept. 12, 2007
Well, four matches are in the books now for the Huskies. We have a
very big week coming up with three-time defending Colonial Athletic
Association Champion Hofstra tonight at 7:00 p.m. in Morrone Stadium
and then on Saturday, September 15th, we will open up our BIG EAST
Schedule with the Georgetown Hoyas at 7:00 p.m., also at Morrone
Stadium.
We had two
great overall team efforts this weekend. Our defense, anchored by Herman
Trophy Candidate Julius James, was spectacular. Oscar Castillo and Greg King
continue to do all the little things to help our team go. Toni Stahl, Ryan
Cordeiro and Mike Pezza's unselfish play were huge in both victories.
Cordeiro has shown unbelievable development and maturity in his three
years at UCONN and is ready to be a professional player.
And what a
goal by Akeem "Boogie" Priestley with nine seconds to go to win the FIU
match ... a brilliant serve by Cordeiro, a layoff by our leading scorer
O'Brian White and a cool, calm finish by Boogie. Akeem is starting to
fulfill the potential he has shown.
Also, our
crowds were vocal in both matches. The Goal Patrol with 540 members (this
is not a public relations construed number, we now have 540 in the UConn
Men's Spirit Group) were the difference in both matches with their support.
These young ladies and men make up the largest sport spirit group in college
soccer.
This group
is open to UConn students and if you are interested in joining you can call
Kevin Bacher at 860/486-6824 or email him at
kevin.bacher@uconn.edu . I want to publicly thank the Goal Patrol for
your help so far, our players rave about the support you provide us and you
are the reason that the Husky Fans are the No. 1 fans in college soccer.
We look forward
to seeing you this week at two critical matches!
