Pisano Becomes First-Ever Three-Time Javelin Champion at BIG EAST Championships

PISCATAWAY, NJ (May 2) - Two-time All-American Paul Pisano (Toms River, N.J.) became the first-ever three-time javelin champion at the 2004 BIG EAST Championships, helping lead the University of Connecticut men’s track and field team to a third-place overall finish.

Pisano threw a distance of 69.17 meters (226-11) to earn his third consecutive title. UConn had another individual winner in freshman Daniel Hutcherson (New London, Conn.) who took the high jump title on Saturday.

UConn placed third among the 11 teams with 115 points. Notre Dame won the title with 172.5 points, and Rutgers placed second with 160.5 points.

The Huskies recorded nine total top-three finishes at the meet. Earning second-place finishes were Aaron Isaacs (Danbury, Conn.) in the discus, John Barth (South Kingstown, R.I.) in the hammer throw and Chris Mazza (Toms River, N.J.) in the pole vault.

Joel Legare (Holden, Mass.) placed third in the 800-meter run, Calvin Rhodes (Trenton, N.J.) earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, and Jake Radzevich (Hampstead, N.H.) took third in the pole vault.

On Saturday, UConn took places four through seven in the decathlon, with Joe DiCola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) being the leader for the Huskies with 6,477 points to place fourth. DiCola won the decathlon pole vault, and Mike Delgado (Bridgewater, Mass.) was the winner in the decathlon 110-meter hurdles.

UConn will return to action on May 7-8 at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass.
