Huskies Hold Off Seton Hall to Tie NCAA Record

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (January 15) - Freshman Barbara Turner (Cleveland, OH) scored 10 second half points to lead the University of Connecticut to a 53-48 triumph over Seton Hall, at a sold out Walsh Gym in South Orange, NJ. The victory for the Huskies is their 54th straight, which ties Louisiana Tech's NCAA Division I women's basketball record and moves UConn to 15-0 overall and 3-0 in the BIG EAST.  Seton Hall falls to 8-5 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.

The first half saw both teams struggle shooting from the field as the Huskies shot 23%, while Seton Hall was  just 19% from the field.  UConn jumped out to an early 11-4 lead on a 9-0 run with 10:30 to play in the half.  The Huskies then went cold from the field as they didn't hit a field goal for the final 4:15 of the half, while Seton Hall went on a 5-0 run for a half time score of 20-15.  Willnett Crockett (Harbor City, CA) was the lone bright spot for the Huskies with eight points and eight rebounds.

The second half saw the Huskies be out shot 52% to 37%, which allowed Seton Hall to pull within two at 46-44 with just over two minutes in the game.  UConn though used some key late free throws to seal the victory. 

Turner finished the game with 14 points and six rebounds, while fellow freshman Crockett added 11 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double.  Sophomore Jessica Moore (Anchorage, AK) was the only other Husky in double figures with 10 points, five rebounds and four blocks.  The Huskies out rebounded the Pirates 47-36 allowing the Huskies to convert on 17 second chance points.

Seton Hall was led by Monica Johnson with 11 points. 

The Huskies return home to the Hartford Civic Center on Sat., Jan. 18 against BIG EAST opponent Georgetown.  Game time is scheduled for noon and can be seen locally on CPTV.
