Turner and Huskies Sink Seton Hall

Freshman Barbara Turner (Cleveland, OH) scored 16 points to pace four teammates
in double figures as top-ranked and unbeaten Connecticut blew past Seton Hall
84-44 Sunday afternoon before a sellout crowd of 10,167 at the Harry A. Gampel
Pavilion.
The win, the record-extending 63rd consecutive
win for the Huskies, improves the UConn record to 24-0 on the campaign, 11-0 in
the BIG EAST. The Pirates slip to 12-10, 6-6 in the league.
Connecticut used pinpoint shooting and a stifling defense
to earn the victory. The Huskies’ shot 59% (30 of 51) from the field, second
best on the season behind the 60% effort against Pepperdine on December 20.
Seton Hall was held to just 25% shooting (15 of 61.)
UConn scored the game’s first basket and was never headed
in the contest, leading by a 35-17 count at intermission. Junior forward Diana
Taurasi (Chino, CA) had seven assists and five blocks in the game’s initial
twenty minutes. Sophomore Ashley Battle (Pittsburgh, PA) led the Huskies with
eight points at the half.
The hot-shooting Huskies shot a torrid 63% after halftime,
making 17 of 27 attempts, paced by Turner, who scored 10 of her game-high 16
points after intermission. Turner was joined in double figures by Battle and
freshman guard Ann Strother (Castle Rock, CO), who scored 14 apiece, and Jessica
Moore (Palmer, AK) and Maria Conlon (Derby,
CT) who each netted 10 points.
Turner paced the Huskies’ 40-29 rebounding advantage with a game-high eight.
Taurasi, who scored just four points on just one of four field-goal attempts,
had a season-high and career BIG EAST-high 10 assists.
Connecticut controlled all facets of the game against the
Pirates, scoring 42 points in the paint and dominating the transition game,
outscoring Seton Hall 21-2 on the fast break.
LaNedra Brown paced Seton Hall with 12 points.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, February 19,
when they travel to Coral Gables, FL to play Miami. Tip-off is set for 7:00
p.m. and the game will be televised locally by CPTV.
