Taurasi and Conlon Help UConn Calm Miami

Boxscore (PDF) CORAL GABLES, FL (Feb. 19, 2003) - Juniors Diana Taurasi (Chino,
CA) and Maria Conlon (Derby, CT) both finished in double figures to
lead the No. 1 University of Connecticut women's basketball team to an
81-60 victory over the Miami Hurricanes, in front of 4,973 at the
Convocation Center in Coral Gables, FL. The win moves UConn to 25-0
on the season and 12-0 in the BIG EAST and extends the Huskies consecutive game
winning streak to 64 games. The Hurricanes fall to 14-9 overall and 6-6 in
the conference. The Huskies started off slowly and faced their largest deficit
since Tennessee at 23-15 with over seven minutes to play in the half. UConn
would answer though trailing by seven at 25-17, the Huskies put together a 19-4 run to end the first half with
a score of 37-29.
Connecticut would continue to push ahead right away in the second
half using an 11-0 run for a 48-29 lead. The Huskies would
control the game from there as they shot 59 percent from the field to
Miami's 34 percent in the second half.
Taurasi finished the game with 19 points and nine rebounds on 5-9
shooting from the field and a 9-10 night from the charity stripe.
Conlon also joined her in double-figures with 15 points and grabbed
four boards, while shooting 7-10 from the field. The Huskies
were led in assists by freshman Ann Strother (Castle Rock, CO), who
dished out six dimes to go along with nine points and five rebounds.
The Huskies out rebounded Miami 44-42, but the Hurricanes dominated the
offensive glass grabbing 20 offensive rebounds, which led to 20 more shot
attempts. UConn shot a sparkling 53 percent from the field though to the
Hurricanes 33 percent. Connecticut also was 18-26 from the foul line,
while Miami was only 7-9.
Miami was led by Tamara James with 19 points and seven rebounds UConn now will return back home to play BIG EAST
rival Notre Dame on Sunday, February 23 at Gampel Pavilion. Tip-off is set
for 2 pm and can be seen locally on CPTV. |
