SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- University of Connecticut basketball players led both the United States men’s and women’s teams to split a pair of games over the weekend as the Pan Am games began in the Dominican Republic.

UConn’s Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon are both members of the men’s team as that squad defeated Argentina by an 80-79 count on Saturday but lost to Puerto Rico on Sunday by a 86-85 score. The United States now faces Uruguay on Monday at 3 p.m. Eastern in a must-win situation in order to advance to the medal round.

In the win over Argentina, Okafor scored 13 points and added six rebounds as a starter while Gordon came off the bench to add two points. In the Sunday loss to Puerto Rico, Okafor again started and netted 11 points with two rebounds while Gordon added six.

"Everyone had to step it up tonight,” said Okafor after the win over Argentina. “This is a completely different atmosphere, but we all responded well."
