SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- University of
Connecticut basketball players led both the United States men’s and women’s
teams to split a pair of games over the weekend as the Pan Am games began in the
Dominican Republic.
UConn’s Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon are both members of the
men’s team as that squad defeated Argentina by an 80-79 count on Saturday but
lost to Puerto Rico on Sunday by a 86-85 score. The United States now faces
Uruguay on Monday at 3 p.m. Eastern in a must-win situation in order to advance
to the medal round.
In the win over Argentina, Okafor scored 13 points and
added six rebounds as a starter while Gordon came off the bench to add two
points. In the Sunday loss to Puerto Rico, Okafor again started and netted 11
points with two rebounds while Gordon added six.
"Everyone had to step it up tonight,” said Okafor after the
win over Argentina. “This is a completely different atmosphere, but we all
responded well."
On the women’s side, UConn’s Ann Strother and Barbara
Turner are both on the U.S. team. The United States lost to Cuba on Saturday by
an 84-62 count and defeated Canada on Sunday by a 56-53 score. The United States
play Brazil at 11 a.m. Eastern on Monday followed by games with Argentina on
Tuesday and the Dominican Republic on Wednesday before the medal round.
In the loss to Cuba, Strother tied for the team lead with
11 points – all coming in the first quarter as the U.S. went out to a 21-12
lead. Turner added nine points. In the win over Canada, Strother and Turner each
scored eight points and added four rebounds.
