Okafor, Gordon Lead USA Pan American Team into Medal Round; Strother and
Turner Help Women's Team Upset Brazil

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican
Republic – University of Connecticut forward Emeka Okafor scored eight points
and Husky guard Ben Gordon came off the bench to score six on a pair of
three-point field goals to lead the United States to a 74-72 win over Uruguay at
the Pan American games on Monday.
The win lifts the United States
into the four-country medal round, which begins Tuesday as the U.S. plays Brazil
at 7 p.m. Eastern. The finals are on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the United States
women’s team overcame a 44-32 halftime deficit to defeat Brazil by a 77-64 score
as pool play continued. UConn’s Ann Strother scored seven points with three
rebounds in her starting role while Husky Barbara Turner came off the bench to
record two points, two rebounds and a pair of assists.
The United States concludes
pool play with game against Argentina on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Eastern and the
Dominican Republic on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
