STORRS, Conn. (February 9, 2004) — Connecticut senior Diana Taurasi has
been named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the period ending February 8,
conference officials announced today.
Taurasi led the Huskies to a 2-0 mark last week which featured wins at No.
1/1 Tennessee and vs. No. 22/20 Miami.
The senior guard averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.0
steals over the two games.
In the win over No. 1/1 Tennessee, Taurasi became the UConn all-time leader
in 3-point field goals when she hit the 280th trey of her career to break Wendy
Davis’ previous career mark of 279.
Taurasi finished with 18 points, five rebounds and five steals against
Tennessee.
She closed out the week with a 21-point, seven-rebound performance against
No. 22/20 Miami on Feb. 8. Taurasi also added a career-high six steals in the
83-65 home win over the Hurricanes.
Taurasi’s 21 points against Miami marked the seventh time she has scored at
least 20 points this season and the 32nd time in her career.
Sunday’s game vs. the Hurricanes also represented the 100th time that Taurasi
has scored double-figure points in her career.
Taurasi’s selection as the BIG EAST Player of the Week marks the second time
this season that she has been recognized by the conference.
The selection is the 10th of Taurasi’s career - two shy of the all-time
record for most BIG EAST Player of the Week honors, currently held by former
Husky Rebecca Lobo with 12.
