STORRS, Conn. (February 10, 2004) — Former UConn women’s basketball
standout and current member of the WNBA’s Detroit Shock, Swin Cash, is one of
four players invited to the 2004 USA Basketball Women’s Senior National Team
training camp on Feb. 19 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Joining Cash at the Feb. 19-27 training camp will be Cheryl Ford (Detroit
Shock), Ruth Riley (Detroit Shock ) and Nikki Teasley (L.A. Sparks).
The four players will be among a number of athletes competing for the final
three spots on the 2004 USA Basketball Women’s Senior National Team which will
compete at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece from August 13-29.
Following the first three days of training in Jacksonville, Fla., the U.S.
Senior National Team will depart for Cuba for a three-game exhibition series vs.
the Cuba National Team in Havana on Feb. 24-26.
Already slated to play on the 2004 U.S. Senior National squad in Athens are
Sue Bird (Seattle Storm), Tamika Catchings (Indiana Fever), Shannon Johnson (San
Antonio Silver Stars), Lisa Leslie (L.A. Sparks), DeLisha Milton-Jones (L.A.
Sparks), Katie Smith (Minnesota Lynx), Dawn Staley (Charlotte Sting), Sheryl
Swoopes (Houston Comets) and Tina Thompson (Houston Comets).
The U.S. Senior National Team will also hold training camps on March 18-28
(Europe) and April 4-13 (New Orleans, La.) Each of those training periods will
feature additional players who will also be considered for the final three spots
on the squad.
