Barbara Turner Named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week
STORRS, Conn. (February 16, 2004) — UConn
sophomore Barbara Turner was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week for the
period ending Feb. 15, conference officials announced today.
The honor marks the first time Turner has been selected as the conference’s
player of the week in her career and she is the first UConn player other than
Diana Taurasi to win the award since Swin Cash was recognized on Feb. 11, 2002.
Turner averaged 20.0 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting .739 (17-of-23)
during a week which saw the Huskies record decisive road wins at Syracuse and
Rutgers.
In the win over the Scarlet Knights, Turner erupted for a career-best 27 points,
while shooting 12-of-15 overall and adding eight rebounds.
Against Syracuse, Turner finished with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the
field, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Turner has posted double-figure points in 16 of UConn’s 22 games this season and
is currently averaging 13.5 points per game - the second-highest total on the
squad.
Turner selection as the BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week marks the third time a
UConn player has been honored this season as Diana Taurasi was previously
honored on Jan. 12 and Feb. 9.
Boston College’s Jessalyn Deveny was chosen to share this week’s honor with
Turner.
