Sherwood Earns BIG EAST Weekly
Honors for First Time
PROVIDENCE, RI
(February 23) — UConn freshman Liz Sherwood was named BIG EAST Freshman of the
Week for the period ending Feb. 22, BIG EAST Conference officials announced
today.
Sherwood’s recognition marks the first time she has received the weekly honor
from the BIG EAST in her career and her selection marks the first for a UConn
player since Barbara Turner was selected as the league’s rookie of the week four
times last season - most recently Feb. 17, 2003.
Sherwood posted a season-high 14 points while shooting 6-of-7 overall from the
field in Connecticut’s 97-42 win over Pittsburgh on Feb. 19.
She added four points in just six minutes of action in the Huskies’ 81-60 win at
No. 23/23 Boston College on Feb. 21.
Sherwood is averaging 4.8 points and 1.9 rebounds this season while posting the
second-best field goal percentage on the squad at .623 (38-of-61).
UConn (22-2, 12-1 BIG EAST) returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 25 when it
hosts Providence (4-20, 0-13 BIG EAST) at Gampel Pavilion beginning at 7:30 p.m.
