UConn Inks Junior College All-American During Late Signing Period

STORRS, Conn. (May 27, 2004) — Junior college standout Rashidat Sadiq (Epe Lagos, Nigeria/Central Arizona College) has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend the University of Connecticut and play for the Huskies beginning this fall, UConn women’s basketball head coach Geno Auriemma announced today.

Sadiq, a 6’2" swing forward out of Central Arizona College in Coolidge, is the fourth member of the Huskies’ 2004 signing class.

A two-time first-team National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-America choice, Sadiq will arrive at UConn with two years of eligibility remaining.

A native of Nigeria, Sadiq is planning on returning home this summer to compete on the Nigerian National Team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, prior to her arrival in Storrs.

She ranked second among NJCAA national scoring leaders at 24.9 points per game and 11th in rebounding at 10.9 rpg while pacing Central Arizona to a 33-3 mark and a third-place finish in the NJCAA Tournament during the 2003-04 campaign.

Sadiq was a back-to-back choice as the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Year in each of the last two seasons.

She wrapped up her Central Arizona career as the program’s leading scorer with her total of 1,629 points – surpassing the previous mark established by former Phoenix Mercury and University of Florida standout Bridgett Pettis.
