UConn Alumni Take Part in "The Game at Radio City Music Hall"

STORRS, Conn. (August 6, 2004) — The United States Olympic Team raced out to a 19-point halftime advantage and never looked back as it cruised to a 74-58 win over the WNBA All-Stars in “The Game at Radio City Music Hall” on Thursday night in New York.

Former University of Connecticut standouts Sue Bird, Swin Cash and Diana Taurasi saw time for the U.S. squad, all in a reserve role. Fellow UConn alum and current member of the Connecticut Sun Nykesha Sales was the program’s lone representative on the WNBA side.

Bird played the most of any of the Huskies with 20 minutes. She finished the game with two points and three assists. Cash enjoyed well-rounded effort as she posted nine points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Taurasi was held scoreless over her 16 minutes of action, but added four rebounds, two assists and a steal in the victory.

The U.S. National Team dominated the game down low as it out-scored the WNBA All-Stars 42-22 in the paint and won the rebounding battle 62-30.

Sales tallied seven points, three rebounds and a game-high four steals in the loss for the WNBA All-Stars.

The U.S. Olympic Team will head to Europe for its final tune-up before Athens where it will compete in a tournament in Salamanca, Spain.

Following the tournament, the United States will remain in Spain and practice on Aug. 10-13.
