UConn’s Jessica Moore and
Ashley Battle Selected in Second Round of 2005 WNBA Draft
Moore selected 24th overall by
Charlotte, Battle selected 25th overall by Seattle
STORRS, Conn. (April 16, 2005) – UConn seniors Jessica Moore
(Palmer, Alaska) and Ashley Battle (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were selected on
back-to-back picks in the second round of the 2005 WNBA Draft on Saturday.
Both former Huskies were chosen in the second round, with Moore being selected
by the Charlotte Sting with the 24th pick overall just prior to Battle being
selected 25th overall by the Seattle Storm, where she will reunite with former
UConn teammate Sue Bird.
Moore and Battle are the 13th and 14th UConn players ever selected in a WNBA
Draft and it marks the third time in the last five years that Connecticut has
had multiple players selected.
Moore was selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team and earned honorable
mention All-BIG EAST following a season which saw her post her 1,000th career
point. She was the Huskies’ leading rebounder in 2004-05 at 6.3 rebounds per
game and registered double-figure points in 11 games as a senior.
She ranks third on the UConn career leaderboard in field goal percentage at .584
and is 22nd all-time among the program’s all-time leading scorers with 1,223
career points.
Battle ended her UConn career as the program’s all-time leader in games played
at 149. She ranks 26th among the program’s all-time scoring leaders with 1,054
career points. The 2003 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, Battle amassed
191 steals during her collegiate career.
Moore and Battle were members of a UConn senior class that posted a record of
132-13 and won three national championships during its four-year run in Storrs.
