ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. (November 22, 2007) –
Freshman Maya Moore (Lawrenceville, Ga.) scored 19 and junior
Kalana Greene (St. Stephens, S.C.) added 15 as the No. 2/2 University of
Connecticut women's basketball team put together a convincing 66-54 win over No.
4/4 Stanford on Thursday night at the Paradise Jam Tournament in the U.S. Virgin
Islands.
The Huskies never trailed and led by as many as 26 points with 9:26 remaining in
the second half as it upped their record to 3-0 on the season. Stanford slips
to 3-1 following the loss.
The win over No. 4/4 Stanford marked Connecticut's first win away from home
against an opponent ranked in the top 5 since it defeated Tennessee 70-61 in the
2004 NCAA National Championship Game. The Huskies had dropped their last three
games overall against opponents ranked among the top 5 nationally.
UConn (3-0) wasted no time setting the tone as it raced out to a 9-0 lead in the
opening 3:04, as four different Huskies registered baskets.
Connecticut
increased the margin to 14 points at 16-2 before Stanford trimmed the lead to
20-14 at 8:18 following a pair of free throws by Candice Wiggins. That was as
close as the Cardinal would get the remainder of the night as UConn out-scored
Stanford 11-8 over the final eight minutes of the half to go into intermission
leading 31-22.
Moore led the Huskies in the first half with seven points and a total of seven
UConn players recorded points in the opening 20 minutes.
UConn opened the second half by out-scoring Stanford 25-10 over the initial 9:06
to put the game out-of-reach at 58-34. Greene led the early second-half
outburst with 13 points during the stretch.
Tina Charles (Jamaica, N.Y.) rounded out UConn's double-figure scorers
with 13 points and added 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season
and the 12th of her career. Moore added 12 rebounds to go along with her 19
points to notch her second double-double in three collegiate games.
The Huskies return to action at the Paradise Jam on Friday, Nov. 24 when they
meet Old Dominion beginning at 8:30 p.m. (ET) in a game that will be televised
by Connecticut Public Television (CPTV).

game marked the 998th
in the history of the UConn Women’s Basketball program.
- First
win away from home (road or neutral) versus an opponent ranked in the top-5
nationally since April 6, 2004 vs. Tennessee - in 2004 NCAA National
Championship Game (70-61).

snapped three-game losing streak against opponents ranked among the top-5
nationally, first since a 51-48 win over No. 3/3 LSU on Jan. 16, 2006
(51-48).

Tonight's meeting with Stanford marked the earliest point in the schedule
that UConn has faced a ranked opponent in the regular season (third game),
since it faced No. 9/12 North Carolina in the second game (Nov. 21) of the
2004-05 season.
