STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 21, 2008) – The University of Connecticut held its weekly football media luncheon on Tuesday for Saturday's game against Cincinnati. Here are selected quotes from the event.
Head Coach Randy Edsall
On Cincinnati’s well rounded team:
If you have ten senior starters on your defense then you know you’re going to be pretty good because there’s a lot of experience there. They have three very good WRs so we know we’ve got our hands full there. Kevin Huber is probably the best punter in the United States. Overall it’s a very solid football team and one that we know we’re going to have to play very well against.
Who is your go-to receiver right now?
We have a lot of inexperience, but they’re competing and doing a lot of good things. They’re blocking well and they made some good catches. Do we have that “go-to” guy? No, we don’t right now. We have to utilize all of the parts. Martin Bedard went in and did a very good job the other day. We need to try to develop those guys a little bit more, and we’re making progress with them.
On UConn’s QB options:
If Zach (Frazer) is playing I have 100% confidence in him, if Cody Endres is in I’ve got 100% confidence in him, or if Johnny (McEntree) is in I’ve got 100% confidence in him. I like Johnny. He’s got a quick release, he throws the ball well, and he has good poise and command. There was a time in the preseason we put him in with the one squad in a scrimmage and I thought he handled himself really well.
Do Tony Ciaravino’s three missed field goals cause concern amongst the coaches?
Dave Teggart is going to kick this week. The reason for that is that all preseason and up to this point in the season we have those guys kick and we chart. Those two guys are very, very close. After Tony’s performance last week, we feel like David should have the opportunity to be the field goal and extra point kicker this week.
How important is it to be back home for Saturday’s game?
It’s good to be back on solid ground with your fans. We’ve had success at home and hopefully that will continue on Saturday. It’s been a long stretch (away from home), I think the longest since in the ten years I’ve been here.
