HAVERHILL, Mass. (March 3, 2008) - Completing an improbable comeback after suffering a knee injury just three weeks ago, University of Connecticut men's hockey goalie Beau Erickson (Hinton, Iowa) was named Goaltender of the Week by the Atlantic Hockey Association conference office Monday. It was his first goaltender of the week award for the season. He had previously been named AHA Player of the Week on January 28.
After suffering a knee injury against Sacred Heart February 8, it was assumed that Erickson's season was over. However, after an MRI showed no damage and he showed a strong commitment to rehab, he was able to make his return this past weekend against Holy Cross. He earned his second career shutout Friday when he stopped 27 shots in the Huskies 3-0 win in Worcester, Mass. In the team's regular season finale, he stopped 25 of 27 shots to give Connecticut their second straight weekend sweep with a 4-2 win over the Crusaders.
Erickson finished the weekend 2-0 with a 1.00 goals against average and a .963 save percentage. He is now 1,401 saves during his UConn career. That ranks third on the all-time Division I career list for Connecticut, which is remarkable considering he is only a sophomore.
UConn will be the seventh seed in the upcoming AHA playoffs and will face fourth seeded Sacred Heart in a best-of-three series next weekend. The series will take place on Friday, March 7 through Sunday March 9, with all games taking place at the Milford Ice Arena in Milford, Conn. All games will start at 7:05 p.m.
