Abrosimova, UConn's leading scorer with a 14.1/game average, sustained a left foot injury in a fall during second half play in Connecticut's 92-88 loss at Tennessee on February 1.
Examinations by UConn physicians Monday at the John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington revealed a ligament tear in Abrosimova's left foot which will require surgery. UConn consulting surgeons Dr. Michael Aronow and Dr. Kevin Shea will perform the procedure on Wednesday at the UConn Health Center's'Dempsey Hospital.
Following the surgery, Abrosimova will spent approximately six weeks in a non weight-bearing cast and will follow that with six additional weeks in a walking boot. The normal return to basketball for this type of injury is expected to range in the five-to-six month span.
"We all hurt for Svet because this is really unfair to her," said UConn women's basketball head coach Geno Auriemma. "With everything she had going for her this year, and the wonderful way her total game had developed, her college career shouldn't have to come to a close this way. But, it just shows all of us how fragile everything in life really is. Who would have thought that Svetlana's last college game would be against Tennessee? She knows her coaches and her teammates will support her every step of the way as she goes through her surgery and her rehabilitation period."
In addition to leading the Huskies in scoring, the two-time All-American from St. Petersburg, Russia is No. 1 on the team in steals (54) and second on the team in both assists (4.1/game) and rebounding (6.5/game).
The 6-2 Abrosimova concludes her four-year UConn career ranked No. 5 in career scoring with 1,865 points, carrying a career scoring average of 14.7/game. She is No. 3 at UConn in career steals (299), No. 5 in career assists (473), and No. 7 in career rebounding (814).
Connecticut, 18-2 overall and 8-1 in the BIG EAST Conference, plays at BIG EAST newcomer Virginia Tech on Wednesday (Feb. 7) at 7 p.m.
