MINNEAPOLIS -- For the third time in as many games, the University of Minnesota handed UConn a loss as the Golden Gophers had everyone cross the plate at least once in a 14-8 win. The loss is UConn's seventh straight and drops the Huskies record to 1-10, while Minnesota improves to 9-7.
Starting for the Gophers was Travis Cole who picked up his first-ever collegiate victory. Entering the game in the fifth inning, Cole gave up just two hits and struck out four. For UConn, Erik Drown (So., Ipswich, MA) made his first start of the season lasting one and one-third innings in being tagged with the loss.
Jason Kennedy led the Minnesota offense as he crossed the plate four times and was one of five to knock in two RBI. UConn posted four runs in the top of the second thanks in part to two of Minnesota's four errors on the day. The Golden Gophers quickly took over the lead adding four of their own in the bottom of the second and broke it open with six more in the fourth. It was in that inning, that Kennedy singled to right field to get things going as a Brian Tisbert (Sr., Andover, MA) throwing miscue brought Jack Hannahan and Josh Holthaus around.
For UConn, Jon Gorrie (Jr., Northboro, MA) went 3- for-4 and led the team with two RBI. With the issue no longer in doubt, Gorrie's first came on a sac fly to left in the fifth as he picked up his second on a single to center field in the ninth to plate Cy Hess (Jr., Oakdale, CT).
After spending the first month of its season on the road against teams from the SEC, Big 10 and the Southern Conference, UConn is nearly ready to begin the BIG EAST slate. A mid-week tilt at Sacred Heart in Fairfield, CT, is schedule for 3 p.m. on April 13th before league play begins with a three-game set against St. John's in Jamaica, NY, March 17-18 .
