KINGSTON, RI - University of Connecticut center fielder Mike Scott (Jr., Darien, CT) and utility player Peter Soteropoulos (So., Peabody, MA) were selected to the 2001 Division I All-New England Baseball Team as announced by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Coaches Association Wednesday afternoon.
Scott, the co-BIG EAST Player of the Year, batted a conference-best .451 in league play this season. The junior topped the hits (46) and on-base percentage (.491) charts and ranked second in runs scored (24) in conference games. Overall, he batted .413 with three homers and 34 RBI and 85 hits. He added 16 doubles and four triples. His season hit full stride during a 21-game hitting streak, which started on March 2 at Georgia and ended on April 8 against Pittsburgh and during the span Scott went 44-for-88 (.500). He also turned in 24- multi hit games, which included a 5-for-5 effort against Virginia Tech (4/1) and a 5-for-6 display at Sacred Heart (3/15).
This year, Scott led the Huskies in eight different categories: batting average (.413), runs scored (48), doubles (16), total bases (118), at bats (206), slugging percentage (.573), hits (85), triples (4). His 85 hits this year ranks as the best single-season total in UConn history as he passed Billy Rich who had 82 in 1997, while his .413 batting average stands in sixth.
Soteropoulos, who was a third team All-BIG EAST honoree, was used as a pitcher at first base and in the outfield in 2001. He finished second on the team in hits (60) and total bases (87). He ranked third on the team in terms of batting average with a .364, runs scored (40). Soteropoulos also had 17 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games. On the mound, Soteropoulos made four starts and went 18 innings and went 2-1 on the year with a 4.50 ERA.
The New England Intercollegiate Baseball Coaches Association will host its 27th annual All-Star Game at Fenway Park on Friday, June 1 at noon. The game will feature the University Division (Division I) against the College Division (Division II and III).
After a four year absence, the game will be played in Fenway Park as it had been played at Senator Thomas J. Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT, each of the last four seasons.
In the past, major league players Jeff Bagwell (Hartford), Gary DiSarcina (UMass), Mark Sweeney (Maine), Charles Nagy (UConn) and Ron Villone (UMass) have appeared in the game.
Rosters for both teams will be announced next week.
