UConn Soccer's Casey Zimny Named To U.S. Women's National Team Pre-Nordic Cup Roster Under-21 squad will begin training June 14 at San Diego's U.S. Olympic Training Center.
STORRS, CT (June 12) - University of Connecticut women's soccer team member Casey Zimny (Rochester, NY) has been named to the US Under-21 Women's National Team pre-Nordic Cup roster announced by head coach Jerry Smith Monday afternoon. Zimny and the U-21 team will begin a week-long training camp with 24 players on June 14 at the US Olympic Training Center in San Diego, CA in preparation for the 2001 Nordic Cup.
Moving to the backfield position for UConn's 2000 season, Zimny was the mainstay of the Husky defensive line. Having started and played in all 26 games, Zimny and the defense held the opponents to 0.8 goals per game, 7.7 shots per game and shutout the opposition 14 times this season. Zimny was named an All-Big East Second Team selection and a NSCAA/adidas All-Region Second Team member.
The annual Nordic Cup Tournament serves as the top competition in the world for the U-21 women. It will be contested this summer in Norway at the end of July. The USA has won three of the last four Nordic Cup tournaments, last year winning 1-0 in a classic final against Germany in Germany. This will be Coach Smith's first Nordic Cup at the helm of the U-21 team after taking over for Jillian Ellis last March.
