STORRS, CT (January 4) — Connecticut women’s soccer All-Americans Casey Zimny (Rochester, NY) and Alexa Borisjuk (North Haven, CT) were named to the roster for the Umbro Select All-Star game.
The group, which is split into East and West squads, includes most of the top college seniors in the country. A week of competition and training will culminate with the All-Star game on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Lockhart Stadium, home of the MLS Miami Fusion. The game will serve as an opportunity for players to showcase their talents before the WUSA draft on Monday, Feb. 11.
Zimny, the 2001 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and member of the All-BIG EAST First Team, anchored a defense that gave up 0.7 goals a game and recorded 13 shutouts. Her lone goal of the season came in UConn’s 3-1 win over No. 4 Notre Dame on Oct. 21, giving her seven goals in her career. A four-year starter, Zimny started in 96 games and stands tied for sixth in the UConn record books for games played with 98.
Borisjuk, a midfielder, notched a career-best seven goals in 2001 and added a team-best seven assists for 21 points. Those totals, which ranked her second in scoring on the team, also earned her a spot on the 2001 All-BIG EAST First Team. In 93 career games, Borisjuk recorded 17 goals and 18 assists for 52 points.
