Storrs, CT (January 8) -- After a successful season which saw the Huskies finish 18-6-0 overall, six Connecticut women's soccer players earned Soccer Buzz Northeast Region honors on Tuesday.
Seniors Casey Zimny (Rochester, NY) and Alexa Borisjuk (North Haven, CT) were each named to the Soccer Buzz Northeast Region First Team. Freshman Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, NM) and senior Mary-Beth Bowie (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) were named to the second team, and junior Sarah Popper (Penn Yan, NY) made the third team. Graczyk and classmate Abby Shepherd (Milford, MI) were named to the All Freshman Team. In addition, Graczyk was named 2001 Northeast Region Freshman of the Year.
The honors marked the first for Borisjuk and Popper in their careers. Zimny was named to the first team last season and the freshman team in 1998. Bowie also earned her way to the second team last season.
Connecticut picked up its third Northeast Region Freshman of the Year award as Graczyk picked up the 2001 honor after past Huskies Mary-Frances Monroe (1998) and Jennifer Carlson (1997) also earned the distinction. Graczyk led UConn in scoring, netting 24 points and leading the Huskies to a No. 1 ranking in the Buzz Northeast Region polls.
Forty-one schools comprising the Northeast Region were eligible for Buzz awards, presented since 1996. Awards were decided by a vote open to all Division I Head Coaches and Soccer Buzz staff. Soccer Buzz national awards will be announced later this week.
