STORRS, CT (February 14) — Connecticut women’s soccer senior Casey Zimny (Rochester, NY) was named to the collegesoccer.com All-America Second Team on Thursday, as announced by the web site.
The honor adds to the long list of accolades Zimny has rounded up this season. The 2001 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and member of the All-BIG EAST First Team, Zimny was also named to the NSCAA/adidas All-America and NSCAA All-Northeast First Teams, the Soccer Buzz All-America Second Team and the Soccer Buzz Northeast First Team. On Monday, she was also selected by the WUSA's Washington Freedom with the 10th pick of the 2002 WUSA Draft.
This season, Zimny anchored a defense that gave up 0.7 goals a game and recorded 13 shutouts. Her lone goal of season came in UConn’s 3-1 win over No. 4 Notre Dame on Oct. 21, giving her seven goals in her career. A four-year starter at both midfield and defense, Zimny started in 96 games and stands tied for sixth in the UConn record book for games played with 98.
