VILLANOVA, PA (April 29, 2002) - It was a tale of two games for the University of Connecticut softball team Monday afternoon against Villanova. After taking the first game, 2-1, in extra innings, the Huskies allowed VU pitcher Theresa Hornick to pitch her third career no-hitter in the second game to fall, 5-0.
The split leaves the Huskies overall record at 13-32, and finalizes their conference record for the season at 5-15. For the Wildcats, they move to 44-10 overall and finish the BIG EAST regular season with a 14-4 mark.
In the first game, after getting on the board first with a run in the fourth inning, Villanova tied up the game with a run of its own in the sixth, but the Huskies sealed the game with a run in the ninth that the Wildcats couldn’t answer.
In the fourth, freshman Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC) started the inning off with a triple to right center and scored when junior Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) singled up the middle.
VU used two hits in the sixth to tie up the game, before UConn finally took it in the top of the ninth.
Junior Elisa Brinkworth (Amherst, NY) started the rally when she took first after being hit by a pitch, then stole second. Another hit by pitch, this time on freshman Patty Lowe (Stamford, CT), put runners on first and second for freshman Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY), who reached on an error by VU second baseman Sara Carlson, which allowed Brinkworth to score the final run of the game.
Cook picked up the win to move to 8-17 after pitching all nine innings and striking out five batters. This was the fifth complete extra-inning game that Cook has pitched this season. VU reliever, Hornick, who came in to pitch the final 4.2 innings, dropped to 22-7 overall.
Leading at the plate for UConn was Cook, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI.
In the second game, Villanova scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to overcome the Huskies, behind strong pitching by Hornick.
Junior Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) took the loss, falling to 5-13 after pitching the first four innings of the game. Senior Caryn Haskins (East Freetown, MA) pitched the final two innings of the game. After hitting two batters in the final inning of the first game, which led to the Huskies win, Hornick came back to pitch a no-hitter in the second game to move her record to 23-7.
The Huskies stay on the road with a 4:30 p.m. match-up with Hartford, Tuesday, April 30.
