Storrs, CT (April 4) - University of Connecticut soccer player Shanna Caldwell (Williamsburg, VA), who helped lead the Huskies to a 18-6-0 record and their 20th straight NCAA appearance, earned the 2001 NCAA National Goals Against Title.
Caldwell, a senior goalkeeper, allowed only five goals in 15 games last season. She ended the year with a 0.39 goals against average, just below North Carolina's Kristin Deplatchett (0.40) for the national title.
After backing up sophomore Erin Rice (Keller, TX) for the first 12 games, Caldwell got her first start of the season on Oct. 12 at West Virginia. She made the most of her opportunity, making eight saves in a shutout win that earned her the starting job for the rest of the season. The win also started an eight-game winning streak for the Huskies, with Caldwell finishing the year with a 10-2-0 record and six solo shutouts.
Caldwell was twice named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, sharing the honor on Oct. 22 and winning it outright on Oct. 29. She was also named ECAC Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 31.
