Taurasi Helps Huskies Down Virginia Tech

STORRS, CT (Jan. 12) - Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) dropped in 18 points to help the University of Connecticut down Virginia Tech 69-57, in front of 10,167 at Gampel Pavilion. The win extends UConn's winning streak to 53 games and moves the Huskies to 14-0 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST. Virginia Tech with the loss falls to 10-4 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
The first half was a fight until UConn went on a 9-1, run that was capped off by a Barbara Turner (Cleveland, OH) lay in to give the Huskies a 10 point lead with 2:33 to go. The Huskies would hold on from there to take a 35-25 halftime lead.
The second half saw Virginia Tech claw there way back to within six, before UConn went on a 12-1 run started by a jumper from freshman Ann Strother (Castle Rock, CO). The Huskies never looked back from there as every UConn player saw action in the 12 point victory.
Joining Taurasi with double figures were Turner, Strother and sophomore Jessica Moore. Turner finished with 16 points , while Strother added 11. Moore was also in double figures for the second straight game with 13 points.
Virginia Tech was led by Ieva Kublina with 16 points and five rebounds. Carrie Mason and Chrystal Starling also scored in double figures for the Hokies with 10 points each.
UConn returns to action against BIG EAST rival Seton Hall on Wed., Jan. 15 at Walsh Gym in South Orange, NJ. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and will be televised locally by CPTV.
