Battle Helps Huskies Dominate Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 26) - Ashley Battle scored a career-high 17 points and had a career-high seven steals to lead the University of Connecticut women's basketball team to a 97-57 defeat of the Georgetown Hoyas at McDonough Gym in our nation's capital.
The win is UConn's 66th in a row and clinches a share of the regular season BIG EAST title for the 10th straight time and the 13th overall. The Huskies also move to 27-0 on the season and 14-0 in the BIG EAST Conference, while Georgetown with the loss falls to 14-11 overall and 5-9 in the conference.
Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) scored the first eight points for UConn to jump out to an early 8-3 lead. The Husky bench took over from there, with Barbara Turner's (Cleveland, OH) eight points and Battle's (Pittsburgh, PA) six steals helped Connecticut go on a 19-4 run to put the Hoyas away early at 27-7. UConn would maintain their lead for the rest of the half and go to the locker room with the score 42-25.
The Huskies and Hoyas played evenly through the first part of the second half, before UConn went on a 14-5 run for a 30 point lead at 75-45 with 7:59 remaining to play in the game. Head coach Geno Auriemma subbed freely through the remainder of the half as Connecticut never allowed the Hoyas to put together a run. UConn shot a season high 72 percent in the second half on 18-25 shooting from the field.
Taurasi finished the game with 17 points to go along with five assists and Turner added 16 points on 5-5 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds. The only other Husky in double-figures was freshman Ann Strother (Castle Rock, CO) with 13 points and five assists. Connecticut finished the game shooting 68 percent from the field and 53 percent from behind the arc. UConn was very unselfish as 24 of their 34 field goals in the game were generated from assists.
Georgetown was led by Rebekkah Brunson with 20 points and five rebounds.
The Huskies continue action on the road on Saturday, against Providence at Alumni Hall in Providence, RI. Game time is set for 2:00 pm and can be seen locally on CPTV.
