STORRS, CT (August 24) — The University of Connecticut women’s soccer team and the Boston Renegades played to a 2-2 stalemate Sunday afternoon at the Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. The contest marks the end of the preseason for the Huskies, as they look forward to the start of the regular season next weekend.
The Renegades (a squad which includes eight former UConn standouts) and Connecticut played evenly in the first half as each side had its chances to score. Boston capitalized first as Erin O’Grady scored an unassisted goal off the rebound of a save by Connecticut midfielder Jennifer Sullivan (Stonington, CT) in the game’s forty-third minute. The Huskies could not punch one of their seven first half shots in and the score at halftime stood at 1-0 in favor of the Renegades.
Connecticut stormed out of the gate in the second half as promising freshman Megan Schnur (Butler, PA) rifled a shot in from the left side of the box into the right hand corner of the goal to knot the score at one. Schnur’s goal was her second in as many games this preseason. UConn junior Zhara Jalalian (Auburn, WA) seemed to seal the deal when she took a feed from Elisa Pirinen (Espoo, Finland) and curled a shot around the charging Renegade goalie Megan Frey to propel the Huskies ahead 2-1 in the contest’s 80th minute.
However, both teams decided to play two more ten minute periods and while neither team was able to manufacture a shot in the first ten minute session, former UConn great Alexa Borisjuk scored an unassisted, game-tying goal at 105:27.
Connecticut out shot the Renegades 13-10 on the afternoon. Erin Rice (Keller, TX) played 77 solid minutes in net for the Huskies, making two saves and Megan Jessee played 33 minutes in goal for Connecticut, allowing one goal and making one save. Frey played the entire game in net for the Renegades and made seven saves.
Connecticut begins regular season play Friday, August 29 at 7:00 pm when the Huskies square-off against Wake Forest in the UConn/adidas Soccer Classic in Storrs.
