NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 27, 2005) – The University of Connecticut baseball team concluded the Music City Challenge with a 3-0 loss to No. 16 Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. UConn is now 1-2 overall, while Vanderbilt is 6-0.
Only two Huskies tallied hits in the game, with freshman Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) and sophomore Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) each going 1-for-3 on the day. UConn got both of their hits off Vanderbilt starter Matt Buschman who pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, walking two while striking out six. He was relieved by Stephen Shao who held the Huskies hitless while fanning four.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when the Commodores scored two runs. Tony Mansolino doubled down the left line with the bases loaded to drive in two and put Vanderbilt up 2-0.
The Commodores then added a run to their lead in the eighth when Dominic De La Osa singled up the right side to score Brian Hernandez, who reached base on a walk. The run moved the Vanderbilt lead to 3-0, where it would remain final.
Sophomore Rich Sirois (Ipswich, Mass.) started for UConn and had a solid outing against the nationally-ranked Commodores. Sirois threw six innings, scattering eight hits with one walk and one strikeout. Only one run of his two runs was earned.
Freshman pitcher David Erickson (Stratford, Conn.) made his first collegiate appearance when he came in for Sirois to start the seventh. He limited the Commodores to two hits and one run with a strikeout and a walk.
Connecticut will next travel to Bradenton, Fla., March 4-9 to face six different teams. UConn plays Mount St. Mary’s, Central Michigan, Bowling Green, Holy Cross, Sacred Heart and Maine. The Huskies will then return to Tennessee to participate in the USA Challenge March 11-13, during which UConn plays Arkansas-Little Rock, Memphis, Indiana State and Tennessee-Martin.
