Providence, R.I. (March 1, 2005) – The BIG EAST Conference will honor the University of Connecticut’s 1995 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship team on Sunday, March 6, 2005 during the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship Presented by State Farm at the Hartford Civic Center. The 10th anniversary is commemorating the first women’s basketball National Championship for the Huskies and the BIG EAST Conference.
The ceremony will take place at halftime of the 6:00 p.m. quarterfinal which will feature the No. 2 Notre Dame vs. No. 7 West Virginia/No. 10 Pittsburgh winner.
Connecticut defeated Tennessee, 70-64, at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn., on April 2. The Huskies became only the second undefeated National Champion in NCAA Division I history with a perfect record of 35-0, which marked the most wins by any program – men’s or women’s.
Returning for the festivities will be all 13 players and four coaches from the 1995 squad. They include: Kim Better, Carla Berube, Jamelle Elliott, Jill Gelfenbien, Kelley Hunt, Rebecca Lobo, Brenda Marquis, Sarah Northway, Jen Rizzotti, Missy Rose, Nykesha Sales, Pam Webber, Kara Wolters, head coach Geno Auriemma and assistant coaches Chris Dailey, Meghan Pattyson and Tonya Cardoza.
Lobo led the team in the NCAA Tournament, averaging 16.0 points and 7.5 rebounds en route to being named Most Valuable Player and receiving Consensus National Player of the Year honors. That year, UConn saw three of its players earn All-America status in Lobo, Rizzotti and Wolters while Auriemma was named the National Coach of the Year.
The BIG EAST Championship Presented by State Farm will be held on Saturday-Tuesday, March 5-8. Full session tickets for the event can be purchased via Ticketmaster and at the Hartford Civic Center box office. Package tickets, admission to all 11 games of the championship, are $150.00 per package.
