Huskies Edged by Brown, 3-2
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 21) – Senior Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, N.Y.) went 4-for-4 at the plate, but the University of Connecticut softball team suffered a 3-2 setback to Brown University at the Brown Softball Field on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 14-24 overall, while the Bears improve to 10-14-1 on the season.
Brown jumped out in front, 1-0, in the second as Courtney Jenkins and Amy Baxter opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Melissa Ota followed, sacrificing the runners over to second and third, then Baxter scored on a sacrifice fly by Uchenna Omokaro.
The Bears later added two more runs in the fourth, once again beginning the inning with a pair of hits, singles by Jaimie Wirkowski and Jenkins. Baxter then reached on a fielder’s choice and, with one out, Ota doubled in Jenkins and Baxter.
Pinch hitting for Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, Pa.), senior Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) began a rally for UConn in the fifth with a leadoff single up the middle. Schettini followed with another single and sophomore Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) reached on a fielder’s choice. Sophomore Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.H.) then singled to left, loading the bases for freshman Allie Gendron (Noblesville, Ind.) who drove in Quan and Schettini with the Huskies’ fourth hit of the inning.
However, that would be all Connecticut would score as Omokaro quelled the rally to secure the win (5-4) for Brown. She pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on nine hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. Senior Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) took the loss (9-15) for UConn, throwing four innings and allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Freshman Ashley Thody (Middletown, Conn.) relieved her and allowed two hits in her two innings of work.
Connecticut returns to action on Friday, April 22, when it plays host to Providence College in a BIG EAST doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
