CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (Apr. 6) -- The University of Connecticut softball team suffered two 4-1 setbacks as it was swept by Boston College in a BIG EAST doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies fall to 8-16 overall with a 1-5 BIG EAST record, while the Eagles move their record to 12-12 overall, 2-0 in BIG EAST play.
In game one, the teams played five scoreless innings before Boston College managed to plate four runs in the sixth. Michelle Daly opened the inning with a solo shot to left center. Kimmy Hopkin followed with a single and Jenna Macchi reached on a fielder’s choice. This set up Ashley Obrest for a two-RBI double to right center that gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead. B.C. scored its fourth and final run of the inning on a groundout by Lisa Field, which brought home Obrest.
UConn had the makings of a rally in the seventh as senior Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) knocked a one-out double to right centerfield and junior Kim Castner (Forked River, N.J.) singled up the middle. Senior Jen Ward (Gales Ferry, Conn.) then reached on a fielder’s choice that scored DiBiase and classmate Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, N.Y.) singled to bring the tying run to the plate, but Daly worked her way out of the jam with a pop up by sophomore Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) to end the game.
Senior Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) took the loss (6-7) for the Huskies. She threw six innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Daly picked up the win (5-4) for the Eagles, pitching a complete game and allowing one run on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
In the second contest of the afternoon, Boston College scored all four of its runs in the first inning. Hopkin led off with a walk and Anglea Pandolfo reached on an error. Macchi then sacrificed the runners to second and third and Obrest followed with a single to tally her third and fourth RBI of the day. Elena Ferrero belted a two-run homer to bring in the final two runs for the Eagles.
Connecticut scored its lone run in the fifth inning. With one out, senior Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, Pa.) reached on an error and advanced to second. Classmate Ashley Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) then drove in D’Angelo with an RBI single for UConn’s only hit of the contest.
Daly recorded her second win (6-4) of the day, tossing a one-hit complete game, allowing one unearned run with no walks and three strikeouts. Junior Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, N.Y.) was the pitcher of record for the Huskies as she threw a complete game and allowed four runs, three earned on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Her record falls to 2-9 with the loss.
Connecticut returns to action tomorrow, Thursday, April 7, with a non-conference game against Boston University at 4:00 p.m. in Boston, Mass.
