NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (October 11, 2006) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-25, 20-30, 23-30, 28-30) to Central Connecticut State on Wednesday, October 11, in New Britain, Conn.
The Huskies (13-7, 2-3 BIG EAST) got off to a solid start in game one with senior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) tallying the first two kills of the match. A kill by freshman Devon Farrell (Lafayette, Calif.) would give UConn the lead at 3-0. Central Connecticut fought back to even the score at 4-4 after a kill from Jamie Baumert. Scoring six unanswered points with sophomore Lorelle Schaub (New Brighton, Minn.) behind the service line, the Huskies owned a 14-9 edge to force the Blue Devils into a timeout. CCSU would come back to within one point at 14-13, but two kills by freshman Bridget Denson-Dorman (Maple Grove, Minn.) with a block from Farrell and Silver sandwiched in between showed the score 19-13 in favor of UConn. The Huskies were too much to overcome and won game one 30-25.
CCSU jumped out in game two and never looked back. The Blue Devils took a 9-4 lead with help from two straight blocks from Baumert. Kills by Schaub and Farrell would put UConn to within five at 14-19, but CCSU's defensive effort proved to be stifling as they used seven kills in game two to help win 30-20.
Game three saw both teams battling for an edge early in game one, but neither team could gain more than a two point lead until the Blue Devils rattled off four straight points to go up 14-8. A block by Silver and sophomore Sarah Singer (Waukasha, Wisc.) and a kill added by Denson-Dorman allowed UConn to come back at 12-14. CCSU used a series of seven unanswered points late in the game to increase their lead and ultimately won game three 30-23.
The fourth game was a tight one early on much like game three. A kill by freshman Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) followed by another from junior Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) gave UConn the lead, 15-14. CCSU fought back and took a 24-21 lead to make the Huskies take a timeout. Fueled by Stephanie Groner, the Blue Devils won the game and match, 30-28.
Chambers tallied a match-high 17 kills followed by Farrell with 11 and Seabaugh with 10. Denson-Dorman came up with 53 assists while freshman Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) contributed 25 digs. Silver had a huge defensive effort with 8 blocks.
The Huskies return home to host St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m.
