Berg Takes Third At UConn Alumni Invitational Heptathlon

STORRS, Conn. (January 11, 2007) — University of Connecticut senior Sean Berg (Mystic, Conn.) was the top Husky finisher with a total of 4806 points Thursday afternoon at the UConn Alumni Invitational Heptathlon from the Hugh S. Greer Field House.
Berg, who ended the day in third place overall, finished in the top three in four of the seven events. He took home a second place finish in the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.34 and in the long jump with a distance of 6.72 meters. He went on to finish third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.64 for 827 points. Berg also tied for third in the pole vault with a height of 4.14 meters to garner 656 points.
Former UConn All-American Will Thomas won the event after completing the day with a total of 5727 points. Thomas, who earned All-American status in 2002 and 2003 in the decathlon and in 2004 in the heptathlon, was either first or tied for first in every event except the 60-meter hurdles.
Sophomore Joseph Staub (Stoneham, Mass.) finished second for the Huskies and fourth overall with a total of 4762 points. Staub earned a second place finish in the shot put with a distance of 13.41 meters for a total of 692 points. He totaled 714 points to earn a third place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.90 meter. He also laid claim to a third place finish in the 1000-meter with 565 points. He capped his top three finished by tying for third in the pole vault with a height of 4.14 meters for 656 total points.
Fellow sophomore Sean Smith (Scotch Plains, N.J.) finished third on the team and fifth overall after earning 4548 total points. Smith’s best event was a third place finish in the 1000-meter with a time of 2:49.26 for 773 points.
Freshman John Burns (Franklin, Mass.) capped UConn’s participation in the event with a sixth place finish after earning 4191 total points. Burns’ best finish was in the 60-meter dash as he earned 684 points with a time of 7.59.
UConn returns to action Saturday at 9:00 a.m. when the Huskies travel to New Haven, Conn., to take part in the Yale Invitational.
