TAMPA, Fla. (September 28, 2007) - The 21st ranked University of Connecticut women's soccer team remained undefeated in BIG EAST play, and won their fifth straight game overall with a 1-0 win over South Florida Friday night. Senior midfielder Meghan Schnur (Butler, Pa.) scored the game winner for the Huskies. UConn improves to 6-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Bulls fall to 1-5-1 and 0-2-0.
Both teams came out and played an aggressive, physical game which helped limit each team's chances. In the 16th minute Schnur had the first great chance for either team when the midfielders played her the ball into the box. She was able to get behind the defense and one-on-one with the goaltender, but her shot went just wide of the goal to the right. Senior forward Karyn Riviere (Guilford, Conn.) followed it up with another good opportunity less than three minutes later. Having taken control of the ball in the 18-yard box with her back to the goal, she was able to spin around and fake the defender to get a clean shot on net, which the Bulls keeper was able to get a hand on. South Florida was able to clear the ball just before the Huskies were able to tap the rebound into the open net.
Goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta) made a tough save in the 24th minute. USF forward Lindsay Brauer got a clean look on goal and sent a shot to the high post. Labbe was able to leap up and get a hand on it to knock it out of bounds and stop the Bulls best chance of the first half. For the half South Florida out shot UConn 6-4.
The Huskies scored the game's only goal less than two minutes into the second half. Sophomore defender Lauren Ebert (Hillsborough, N.J.) sent a long pass from the right side of the midfield, diagonally to Schnur who was stationed in the left side of the box. Schnur then one-timed the shot with her left foot, giving the ball a bit of hook that allowed it to find the left corner of the goal for her first of the season.
10 minutes later, senior Alexandra Zedros (Melrose, Mass.) gave Connecticut one more solid scoring chance. Having taken the ball on a breakaway she sent a shot towards the Bulls goal, but it clanked off the crossbar and the goalie was able to knock it out of bounds.
For the game USF out shot the Huskies 12-11. Schnur led the team with three shots, including two on goal. Labbe came up big for UConn, making six saves. She took a tough hit from a South Florida forward in the 80th minute, but was able to stay in the game, and even make one last save on Angelique Waller in the 89th minute.
The Huskies return home for a pivotal BIG EAST game against 19th ranked Marquette Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
