FAIRFIELD, Conn. (September 8, 2007) - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team opened the 2007 fall season with several strong performances at the Fairfield Doubles Festival at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
The Huskies secured wins in Flights Two and Three, taking 13-of-14 matches on the day.
Kelly LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) swept all five matches on route to winning the Flight Two title, knocking off Quinnipiac, 9-8 (3), in the final match.
The Flight Three pair of Ali Campitiello (New York, N.Y.) and Megan Doran (Brigantine, N.J.) also swept their five matches, eventually taking down Quinnipiac, 8-4, in the final. The duo started off their day with an 8-0 shutout of Fairfield's Gabi Davila and Courtney Price.
Jenny Marotta (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Alex Venezia (Manchester, Conn.) also competed in Flight Three, defeating Holy Cross, 8-3.
"I'm very pleased with a great tournament," said head coach Glenn Marshall. "I had each of our new freshmen playing with a returning player, and the results were excellent. We won 13 out of 14 matches and gained some great doubles experience today."
Quinnipiac was victorious in Flight One after UConn's BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) and Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) fell to NJIT's pair in the semifinals, 9-7. Cheung and Herb defeated the top teams from Fairfield, Holy Cross and Providence in the opening rounds.
The UConn women's tennis team returns to action September 14-16 at the Army Invitational.
