HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior Maya Moore (Lawrenceville, Ga.) led all scorers with 33 points as the No. 1/1 University of Connecticut women's basketball team closed out the exhibition season with a convincing 98-68 victory over Vanguard University on Monday night in the XL Center.
Moore led the way with her game-high 33 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the floor, while senior Tina Charles (Jamaica, N.Y.) added 16 points and 11 rebounds for UConn. Also in double-figures were sophomores Tiffany Hayes (Lakeland, Fla.) and Caroline Doty (Doylestown, Pa.) who finished with 15 and 11, respectively.
UConn opened tonight's contest with a 14-0 run in the first 5:03 of the game, including seven points in the first 51 seconds. During that span, five different players recorded points for the Huskies, before UConn extended its lead to as much as 20 as a Moore jumper put the Huskies up 25-5 at the 12:17 mark in the first half.
Moore led all scorers at the break with her 17 points, shooting five-of-11 with two blocks and six rebounds in the first half. Hayes picked up 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor as the Huskies shot .459 (17-for-37) from the floor and limited the Lions to a .361 showing from the field (13-for-36).
UConn opened the second half much like the first, with a 13-2 run in the first 3:08 to open up a commanding 29-point advantage. Moore built on her tally as she scored 16 points in the second frame. She added eight rebounds and four steals in 31 minutes of play.
The Huskies wrapped up the game shooting .493 (35-of-71) from the field while pulling down 38 rebounds. The Lions shot .383 (23-of-60), including a 8-for-26 clip behind the arc.
Vanguard's Rachel Copeland led the Lions with 19 points on the night, including 16 first-half points, while Bridgette Reyes netted 17 on the night. Paige Halberg and Diana Neves also scored in double-figures with 11 and 10.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 23-2 in preseason games dating back to the 1997 season, while recording their 13th victory in their last 14 exhibition contests.
UConn will open the 2009-10 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 14 against Northeastern. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Gampel Pavilion. Prior to the start of Saturday's home opener, the Huskies will be honored for their 2009 NCAA National Championship with the unveiling of the banner commemorating the Huskies' sixth NCAA National Championship.
