Gallagher Posts NCAA B Cut Time In 200-Yard Breaststroke At BIG EAST Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - University of Connecticut freshman Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas) finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke at the 2009 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships as the four-day event concluded on Saturday night.
Gallagher posted a 2:15.33 in the race to give her a "B cut" time for the NCAA Championship in March. Gallagher, who was racing in her third final of the BIG EASTs, earned All-BIG EAST honors in the event. She also earned all-league honors in the 400-yard IM earlier in the event. She had a 2:15.73 in Saturday's preliminaries in the 200-yard breaststroke.
The UConn men and women both finished sixth in the event, while Notre Dame won both titles.
Senor Liza Marianni (Cherry Hill, N.J.) was second in the three-meter diving with a score of 284.65.
Senior Danielle Sanders (Mississauga, Ont.) was ninth in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 16:58.96.
Senior Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) was fifth in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:58.94. Shelps was sixth in the preliminaries in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:00.01 to qualify for the finals.
On the men's side, sophomore Alex Davidson (Pointe-Claire, Que.) was third in 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:46.02. He qualified for the finals in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:46.66 -- the third-best time in the prelims.
Senior Adrian Astiz (Rockville, Md.) was sixth in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:46.77 and sophomore Tomasz Sobek (Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland) was seventh in the 200-yard breststroke in a time of 2:01.19.
Astiz earned a spot in the 200-yard butterfly final with a time of 1:47.30 in the preliminaries -- the fifth-best time. Sobek was eighth in the prelims with a time of 2:202.56.
