FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Junior Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch and recorded his first homerun of the season as the University of Connecticut baseball team defeated Fairfield 5-4 in non-conference action on Monday afternoon.
The Huskies improve to 6-7 on the year, while the Fairfield Stags fall to 3-8 after the loss.
Fairfield took an early 2-1 lead in the third inning before UConn recorded a three-run fifth inning to go up 4-2. Fatse's three-run homer in the inning came after Matt Burnett (Endicott, N.Y.) and Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) reached base on a single and a walk, respectively.
The Huskies' tallied another run in the seventh inning as Fatse led UConn at the plate with a lead-off walk and a stolen base to get into scoring position. He moved to third on a fly out to the outfield and scored the eventual winning run on a wild pitch by Fairfield's Scott Warwick.
The Stags put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh but it was cut short to just two runs as Dennis Accomando (Monroe, Conn.) came in to get the last two outs of the inning and to lead the Huskies out of the trouble.
Doug Jennings (Pompton Plains, N.J.) earned his first win of the season and fifth career as he threw 6.1 innings, allowing four runs and five hits, while striking out five. Senior captain David Erickson (Stratford, Conn.) allowed one hit and struck out two in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Fairfield's Sam Robertson took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year as he allowed eight hits and four runs. The freshman also struck out seven Huskies in five innings of work.
The Huskies will take on Sacred Heart University for the second time this season as they travel to Darien High School in Darien, Conn. for the 3:30 p.m. game on Tuesday, March 17. The Darien High School field is a new location for the contest as it was moved from its original location, the University of Hartford.
