STORRS, Conn. - Fourteen games against 2009 NCAA Tournament participants, including key non-conference showdowns with Stanford (Dec. 23), North Carolina (Jan. 9), at Duke (Jan. 18) and at Oklahoma (Feb. 15), highlight the 2009-10 University of Connecticut women's basketball schedule, which was released today.
Connecticut's non-conference schedule includes games against opponents from the ACC, Pac-10 and Big XII conferences.
The Huskies' 19-game home schedule (including exhibitions) will feature 11 games at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and eight games at the XL Center in Hartford.
In addition, the Huskies' game vs. BIG EAST rival Notre Dame on Jan. 16 at Gampel Pavilion, will be the site of the premiere showing of ESPN's College GameDay. UConn becomes the first-ever school to host a women's GameDay. The Huskies also hosted the first-ever men's GameDay in January of 2005.
The defending national champions will open their exhibition season at Gampel Pavilion on Thursday, Nov. 5 against The College of Saint Rose (N.Y.) before closing out the preseason slate on Monday, Nov. 9 against Vanguard, in a contest to be played at the XL Center.
UConn head coach Geno Auriemma will begin his 25th season at the helm of the UConn program when it begins the regular-season portion of the slate with a home game against Northeastern on Saturday, Nov. 14. The Huskies will follow by taking to the road to face Texas at the AT&T Center in San Antonio on Tuesday, Nov. 17 before a nationally-televised ESPN2 audience.
The Huskies will play 17 regular-season home games in 2009-10, including the four-team, three-day WBCA Classic, which will feature Clemson, Hofstra and Richmond and be played from Nov. 27-29 at Gampel Pavilion.
Other highlights to the home non-conference schedule include a showdown with 2009 NCAA Final Four participant Stanford on Dec. 23 at the XL Center in Hartford and a meeting with perennial power North Carolina on Jan. 9 in Storrs.
Key non-conference road dates include games at Florida State (Dec. 28), Duke (Jan. 18) and Oklahoma (Feb. 15).
Connecticut will open BIG EAST play on Saturday, Jan. 2, when it faces Seton Hall on the road. The Huskies will open the home portion of the BIG EAST slate on Monday, Jan. 4, when they welcome South Florida to the XL Center in Hartford.
The Huskies will face Notre Dame twice in the regular season for the first time since 2003-04 (Jan. 16/home & March 1/away), while UConn will also host BIG EAST contests against Cincinnati (Jan. 7), Rutgers (Jan. 26), West Virginia (Feb. 2), St. John's (Feb. 13), Providence (Feb. 20) and Georgetown (Feb. 27).
Connecticut will travel to face BIG EAST members Seton Hall (Jan. 2), Marquette (Jan. 13), Villanova (Jan. 23), Pittsburgh (Jan. 30), Louisville (Feb. 7), DePaul (Feb. 10) and Syracuse (Feb. 24).
The complete national television schedule, as well as the local Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) broadcast schedule, will be announced in the near future.
UConn posted the program's third perfect season in 2008-09 while finishing 39-0 and capturing the program's sixth NCAA National Championship. The Huskies boast a 347-84 (.805) all-time record in BIG EAST Conference games.
Connecticut has captured either the BIG EAST regular season or tournament title in each of the past 16 seasons.
UConn will announce its men's basketball schedule upon its release from the BIG EAST Conference.
